§ 78-11. Applicability to authorized emergency vehicles.

  • (a)

    The provisions of this chapter regulating operation, parking, and standing of vehicles shall apply to authorized emergency vehicles, except that a driver, when operating any such vehicle in an emergency or in the immediate pursuit of an actual or suspected violator of the law may, except if otherwise directed by a police or fire officer:

    (1)

    Park or stand notwithstanding the provisions of this chapter.

    (2)

    Proceed through a red or stop signal or stop sign, only after first slowing down as may be necessary for safe passage and operation.

    (3)

    Disregard regulations governing direction of movement or turning in specified directions so long as he/she does not thereby endanger life or property.

    (b)

    The exemptions granted in subsection (a) of this section shall apply only when the driver of such emergency vehicle sounds a siren, bell or exhaust whistle as may be reasonably necessary, and said vehicle displays a lighted red lamp visible from the front as a warning to others.
